It's time for â€śTuscan Harvestâ€ť!
The end of summer marks the beginning of one the most important activities of our local culture: the harvest of wine grapes, so called â€śvendemmiaâ€ť. Itâ€™s taking place from the end of August to October. The harvest is the first step of the process that allows our wineries to produce the excellent wines that made Tuscany famous all over the world. In the past the vendemmia was the event of the year and a time of social communion in each village; all men and women of the family, friends and neighbours were working for about a month (shorter or longer - it depend on vineyard size and uniformity) all together for the same aim: the harvest and the production of a good wine. Even children were helping their parentsâ€¦ The end of the harvest, then, was celebrated with abundant feasts, music and dances. And these traditions have survived to the present day - may be changed a little bit and not everywhere, but the point is the same: after good work (day or full season) - good food and wine!

1. â€śGrandi Annateâ€ť Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2012 by Avignonesi
â€śMedium ruby red colour. The elegant bouquet opens with notes of wild roses, plums, and a variety of red fruits, underlined by intriguing scents of sandalwood, myrrh and delicate hints of cloves. The Grandi Annate 2012 is full-bodied yet delicate and round with a fresh acidity and a savoury finish that lingers on the palateâ€ť (Producerâ€™s description). Several important critics have rated this Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine highly: Wine Spectator gave the 2012 vintage a score of 92. Ranked in the top 10 for number of awards won among wines from this region: the The TEXSOM International Wine Awards awarded the 2012 Silver and the Decanter World Wine Awards awarded the 2011 vintage Silver. â€śYou'll notice that this wine is no longer labeled "Riserva." Avignonesi wanted to reduce the time it spends in oak and made the name adjustment accordingly. This seems like a good idea to me. The 2012 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Grandi Annate gives new life to one of Tuscany's most historic wines. There is more elegance and finesse here. I must say that past vintages have been a disappointment, but this expression seems to break all ties with the past. Fruit is sourced primarily from the Banditella vineyard that tends to produce more austere and concentrated Sangiovese. Indeed, this wine is highly redolent of black fruit, tar, licorice and even a touch of white mushroom. 2. Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C. 2012 by Castiglion del Bosco
â€śComplexity, superb structure, and an inviting, mouth-filling palate are the hallmarks of this Sangiovese grown in the 42-hectare Capanna vineyard facing towards the Mediterranean sea. A garnet-flecked ruby red, it releases generous, emphatic fragrances classic to Sangiovese, developing a near-endless progression notable for its beautiful balanceâ€ť (Producerâ€™s description). Several important critics have rated this Brunello di Montalcino wine highly: Wine Spectator gave the 2012 vintage a score of 94 points. â€śThe Castiglion del Bosco 2012 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits classic lines and aromas that are faithfully characteristic of Tuscany's Sangiovese grape. There's a wild or untamed element with forest berry, underbrush, wild mushroom, lavender, tar and licorice. Balsam herbs also appear with cola and grilled rosemary. There's a lot to keep your attention. The mouthfeel is more streamlined and slightly shorter compared to previous vintages. This seems to be a common trait in 2012 Brunello but it does not make too much of a difference in this case.â€ť (The Wine Advocate - Monica Larner). 3. Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore D.O.C. 2014 by ColleMassari
â€śOn the palate it is fresh and fruity, with a sweet and full tannic balance; the finish is composed and supported by its aromatic complexity. Goes well with game, as e.g. local preparations of wild boar, roast, braised and stewed red meats, medium aged cheeseâ€ť (Producerâ€™s description). Critics have scored this as one of the top 5 Bolgheri wines: Wine Spectator gave the 2012 vintage a score of 93, the 2014 vintage was given a score of 92 by James Suckling. Ranked in the top 10 for number of awards won among wines from this region: the Decanter World Wine Awards awarded the 2005 vintage Gold and the 2011 vintage Silver. This wine represents great value for money (as measured by our Quality Price Ratio).
4. Syrah Riserva Cortona D.O.C. 2012Â by Baracchi
â€śWith cool summer nights and shining mornings, Cortonaâ€™s terroir produces Syrah of great depth and distinction that can only be grown here. The soil here is the ideal combination of sand, marl and clay. Syrah Riserva is one of the varietal we make that goes through extended oak aging. It is born from both from exceptional soils and climate of our unique region and from Riccardo Baracchiâ€™s passion for the land. Deep ruby red colour. Great nose of wild berries, cherry liqueur, dried violet and forest floor. Spicy notes of black pepper, cloves, juniper, chocolate and sweet tobacco. Full-flavour, loads of fruit. Pervasive on the palate, warm and juicy with smooth tannins that blend perfectly with the full-bodied structure. Fruity aftertaste and long finishâ€ť (Producerâ€™s description).
